"Woman/Artist" seeks to interrogate the two terms of the category "woman artist," as famously addressed l years ago in Linda Nochlin's groundbreaking essay of 1971, "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" In 1971, the "woman artist" was largely a white, Western, naturalized category. Merely with the critiques addressed to the category of "adult female" from black feminism, from third- and fourth-wave feminisms, from postcolonial and queer theory, and from the LGBTQ and other global communities, combined with the recent rise of curatorial and fine art-market place involvement in women artists, we must turn dorsum to Nochlin'due south question in order to rephrase it. This two-twenty-four hour period conference invites some of the generations of women who accept passed through Yale's portals since 1869/1969, as students and/or kinesthesia, as artists, architectural and art historians, to inquire: what is the meaning and utility of the category "woman artist" at present?

WTC Cortlandt: 20 Years Later on 9/11
A give-and-take about the reconstruction of WTC Cortlandt with artist Ann Hamilton, the nine/xi Memorial & Museum, and MTA Arts & Design

The reconstruction of the Cortlandt Street subway station, located beneath street level within the World Trade Center site, was a pregnant component of the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan. Artist Ann Hamilton created CHORUS, an expansive field of woven text in marble mosaic deputed by MTA Arts & Pattern for the rebuilt WTC Cortlandt station.

Marking the 20th anniversary of ix/xi, the New York Transit Museum volition host a virtual discussion about this project with artist Ann Hamilton; Jan Ramirez, 9/xi Memorial & Museum Primary Curator; and Sandra Bloodworth, director of MTA Arts & Blueprint.

The newsprint volume in this video, made for sesquicentennial celebrations at The Ohio State University, is office of an ongoing public art project, O North E E V E R Y O N Eastward. Thick as an old phone book, its 1,200 pages are filled with images of people photographed behind a translucent membrane that renders in focus only those points where the torso touches the material surface. Subconscious, but revealed by touch, the resulting portraits hold a sense of privacy and intimacy not possible in a time when nosotros are so aware of every point of contact, of every surface we touch, or are in exchange touched by. These figures, isolated and ethereal, are perchance the alone together nosotros are living in this moment.

I called jazz guitarist Bill Frisell to ask if he might consider making a house recording for a video of the book. Neb has performed at the Wexner Center many times, and his music always stirs a deeply felt place in me, a place I might now call Promise. It was April; I was in Ohio, and Pecker was in New York. Bill's sound for the video is our collaboration, our form of bear upon across the physical altitude between us.

The people pictured in the book are students, kinesthesia, staff, and other members of the Ohio State community who offered to participate in the project. Nosotros staged the photography set-upward in ii main campus arteries, the Thompson Library and the Wexner Center for the Arts, who collaborated in support of my autumn 2019 exhibition projection when an object reaches for your paw.

Nonetheless, this video, which shares a turning of its pages, now affords a different class of celebration. Listening closely to Bill's music, y'all will sometimes recognize the melody of OSU's beloved Alma Mater "Carmen Ohio" and, perhaps, feel usa standing arm in arm across our distances, to sing the bail that makes the states The Ohio Land Academy.

"What kind of artist is Ann Hamilton? For someone who showtime emerged as long agone equally the 1980s, and who has had an international reputation since the 1990s, Hamilton is surprisingly difficult to profile. She is, or has been, a textile artist; a body-artist and performance-creative person; an installation artist; a photographer and videographer; an architect, a set-designer, and an animal-wrangler; a maker of civic monuments and of intimate, handcrafted objects. Moreover, in some of her most complex and celebrated works, such as the consequence of a thread at the Park Avenue Armory in Manhattan (2012), she is all these things at in one case."

The New Social Environment Lunchtime Conversation #46

Artists and life-collaborators Ann Hamilton and Michael Mercil join us for New Social Environs #46 with host Artseen editor Amanda Gluibizzi (Instagram: @gluibizziak) to discuss their longstanding practices of bringing people into new kinds of contact with their habitats, some of their recent projects, and how our "hands are also a brain." In response to the imminent crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Brooklyn Rails shifted our operations online. These New Social Environments provide a place to have vibrant conversations in a time of not bad physical distancing.
Ann Hamilton is a visual artist internationally acclaimed for her large-scale multimedia installations, public projects, and functioning collaborations. Her site-responsive procedure works with common materials to invoke detail places, commonage voices, and communities of labor.⁠
Michael Mercil teaches in the Department of Fine art at The Ohio Country University. His fine art explores realms of "the near, the low, the common" in two and three dimensions likewise every bit in landscape compages, film, performance, and farming. Mercil has exhibited in solo and grouping shows throughout the U.s.. His recently opened Art Market™, is an ongoing, studio-based projection located in a southside Columbus neighborhood.⁠

Commissioned by MTA Arts and Design, CHORUS is a monochrome marble mosaic of raised text. Phrases excerpted from the preamble to the 1776 U.s.a. Declaration of Independence intersect with the occurrence of the same of words in the 1948 United Nations Declaration of Human being Rights to course the horizontal lines on the Southbound platform. The composition of the Northbound platform crosses the discussion, EVERYONE, and its occurrences in the Declaration of Human Rights. Woven together in a field of repetitions, the words form an underground refrain that speaks to the civic ethics and aspirations foundational to the quality of life above.
